An Artist’s Life
From 2005, I had begun a small accessories and jewelry business in Bali. In addition to my education in fashion design and art, I had studied silversmithing in Florence; mentored with a wholesale jewelry company that represented artists in Japan and the US; interned for a subversive NYC fashion brand, People Used to Dream About the Future; and studied and learned from manufacturers, importers and exporters, and Javanese and Balinese silversmiths. Collections were carried in Kauai, San Francisco, Tokyo, New York City and Sydney. Some pieces were purchased by celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Pierce Brosnan and Sheryl Crow.
I drafted designs in the formats and process appropriate for the product. I conducted sourcing based on two production seasons and released jewelry collections once a year as well as designed components that could be reused and manipulated in succession, developing a little design library that would help to reduce some of the design and production timing and expense. Jewelry was made by myself and contracted to be handmade by silversmiths or a manufacturing company. Clothing and accessories were contracted to local manufacturing companies. Coordination of the production schedule, exporting and supply was handled directly within Indonesia. As technology became more advanced, I was able to take advantage of online retail sales channels such as Etsy and my own e-commerce store.
