Small Business Everything

SF.Fleur is a small floral business that I manage as a complement to my interests in digital design. There are so many areas of art and design I enjoy pursuing and floristry serves as a great balance to my work as a digital designer. Not only do I learn a great deal from both areas but I am able to apply those learning experiences interchangeably between the two as well.

In addition to the actual floral practice, the business acts as my ”sandbox“ providing creative opportunities to explore new marketing platforms, experiment with fashion styling and shoots, work with clients outside a corporate environment, promotion within social media and unconventional channels, and of course, to learn and grow as a designer. It’s a lot to do, and I whole-heartedly admit, a lot of those things I don’t do well, especially as my main priority is to excel at the floral services for my clients but it does give me the motivation to learn more and get out of my comfort zone.

From my experience so far, I appreciate and recognize the inherent differences in strategic approaches for established brands and companies vs small businesses and start-ups. I relate very well to trying to do-it-all vs being in a situation where the resources are readily at one’s disposal. And while I more closely relate to small business hardships and struggles, I understand the high stakes of larger budgets and expectations of performance from enterprise companies after experiencing both (via agency work and my floral studio). I am sensitive towards the operational challenges a business may encounter and understand well the financial considerations and implications that businesses of all sizes face when making strategic decisions. This experience plays a great role in my approach in working with clients. I feel it is important to be a partner in helping clients identify the problems they face. Providing solutions informed by research and data from a business perspective is vital and when it is combined with creativity and innovative thinking, I feel that is what lays the ground for successful partnerships and really great work.
